Collections and Document Delivery (ILL)

UGent Collection: Books

Through the UGent library catalogue you can access an overview of all available materials, both print and digital.

You can search for books by entering, for example, a title and/or author in the search bar. On the results page, you can immediately see whether a title is available online (via the ‘View online’ button) and/or available in print.

If the book is available in print, you can check ‘Library locations’ to see in which UGent library it can be found.

If the book is available online, you can access it via the UGent network:

  • On a desktop computer in any UGent library
  • Signing in with your UGent account as a student or staff member on ugent.be is sufficient to access UGent-only collections from home or on the go. A VPN connection is no longer required to consult library collections. Access to e-resources remains limited to UGent students and staff with a valid UGent account. The Lean Library browser extension helps you gain smooth access to UGent-only e-resources when searching for them elsewhere (Google Scholar, PubMed, citations, …).

After locating a book in the catalogue, you will find the available options under ‘Services’. Once you are logged in, you will see the options for that specific copy (borrowing, requesting, on-site consultation).

The standard loan period is 4 weeks.

You can view and renew your current loans through your library account after logging in.

UGent Collection: Articles and Journals

Would you like to know whether the full text of an article is available at UGent (online or in print)? Follow these steps:

  1. You either use a desktop computer located on a UGent campus
    OR
On your own device, you log in via ugent.be, and make sure the Lean Library browser extension is installed. This tool helps you quickly access UGent-only e-resources when you encounter them on other platforms (Google Scholar, PubMed, citations, …).
  2. Open the database via ugent.be or https://www.kcgg.ugent.be/en/searching/databases/
  1. In your search results, you will find buttons such as

or a pop-up from the Lean Library extension may appear, guiding you to online full text.
If only a print version is available, you can submit a scan request via lib.ugent.be to receive the article.

You can also search for articles directly via the library catalogue.
Note: in this way, only articles that can be found in databases for which Ghent University has access through licenses, as well as articles included in Biblio, will be displayed.

If the article is not available at UGent, you can place an ILL request (see section: Book or article not available at UGent > Interlibrary Loan (ILL)).

Book or Article Not Available at UGent > Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

If a book, book chapter, or article you need is not available at UGent, you can place an interlibrary loan request. We will then search for the document via a network of libraries in Belgium or abroad.

More information about ILL can be found here.

Tips for searching for articles can be found under Search tips.

If an article is not available, you can submit an ILL request in the following ways:

  • Via the ‘Check UGent access’ button
When you click the button to check UGent access, you will see the option to submit an ILL request if the document is not available.
Click ‘Check available services’ and then, under ‘Document delivery (ILL)’, select ‘Request’.
  • Via the online request form
You can also submit a request directly via this link and then proceed with ‘Get it from other libraries (ILL)’.

Books and Book Chapters

If a book or book chapter is not available within the UGent collection, you can submit an ILL (Interlibrary Loan) request.

This can be done through the request form available via this link. Choose ‘Get it from other libraries (ILL)’ to complete your request.
