SUMMARY:Conducting and Publishing a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis - NL
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nSystematic reviews are key element of evidence-based healthcare. However\, its explicit and systematic approach distinguishes high quality systematic reviews from traditional reviews and lower quality systematic reviews. The course will teach the different steps to take to perform a high-quality\, methodologically sound and reliable systematic review. The course is filled with workshops\, exercises and personal feedback\, thus preparing the participant to get immediately started with his/her own systematic review. \n\nTopic\nThis course teaches the different steps in performing a high-quality\, methodologically sound and reliable systematic review e.g. protocol development and registration\, literature search\, selection of studies\, data extraction and management\, quality assessment\, data synthesis (including meta-analysis)\, writing and publication. \n\nObjectives of the course\nDuring this course of conducting and publishing a systematic review\, the participant will learn: \n\nhow to develop the topic and refine your research question\nwhich study eligibility criteria might be important for his/her review and how to determine the criteria\nwhich databases are relevant in the domain of life sciences and medicine for his/her review\nhow to search for effective keywords\, how to use mining tools for search term identification\nhow to search for quality filters or search blocks\nhow to build a sensitive search strategy and translate them into other databases in the domain of life sciences and medicine\nwhich sources you need to consider to search for unpublished or “grey” literature\nhow to manage your literature\nhow to create and where to register your protocol\nwhich tools are available to aid different processes of conducting a systematic review e.g. literature search\, study selection and data extraction and management\nhow to choose a quality assessment scale or checklist for quality assessment of included studies and the body of evidence\nhow to perform a meta-analysis\nwhich essential elements need to be reported to increase your changes of publication into a high-impact journal\n\nAdditionally\, the course participants will take the first steps in performing his/her systematic review. \nTeachers\nDr. Nele Pauwels works currently (since 2015) as Information Specialist at the Knowledge Center for Health Ghent in Belgium. After she obtained her PhD in Medical Sciences\, Nele worked as staff member at the Knowledge Center of the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders (Center for Evidence-Based Practice)\, where she developed evidence-based guidelines and systematic reviews\, according to international gold standards.\nShe supports researchers (on individual basis) during all stages of performing and writing a systematic review (i.e. from protocol development and registration\, literature search\, record selection\, data extraction\, assessing the risk of bias\, data synthesis\, writing and publication). She teaches basic and advanced searching techniques in several (bio)medical databases (such as PubMed and Embase)\, and reference software (such as EndNote). \nDr. Emmanuel Abatih is a statistician at Department of Applied Mathematics\, Computer Sciences and Statistics. In Spring 2023 het taught a FLAMES course on Meta-Analysis together with Saskia Le Cessie. Furthermore\, he has co-authored several papers where meta-analyse were carried out and where he served as the principal data analyst. \n  \nDr. Ellen Deschepper is a statistician at the Biostatistics Unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Ghent University. She obtained a Master of Science in Biostatistics from Hasselt University in 2000 and completed her PhD in Statistics at Ghent University in 2007. Learn how to strategically use these insights—together with ORCID and your institutional repository—to strengthen your CV\, funding applications\, and academic visibility.\nDescription:\n\nThis tailored session helps researchers\, clinicians\, and professors explore how to measure and strategically use the full reach of their work. We will introduce both traditional bibliometrics through InCites\, which provide insight into academic impact via citation patterns\, and altmetrics through Altmetric\, which capture broader engagement such as mentions in policy documents\, clinical guidelines\, news\, and social media. DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nSystematic reviews are key element of evidence-based healthcare. However\, its explicit and systematic approach distinguishes high quality systematic reviews from traditional reviews and lower quality systematic reviews. The course will teach the different steps to take to perform a high-quality\, methodologically sound and reliable systematic review. The course is filled with workshops\, exercises and personal feedback\, thus preparing the participant to get immediately started with his/her own systematic review. \n\nTopic\nThis course teaches the different steps in performing a high-quality\, methodologically sound and reliable systematic review e.g. protocol development and registration\, literature search\, selection of studies\, data extraction and management\, quality assessment\, data synthesis (including meta-analysis)\, writing and publication. \n\nObjectives of the course\nDuring this course of conducting and publishing a systematic review\, the participant will learn: \n\nhow to develop the topic and refine your research question\nwhich study eligibility criteria might be important for his/her review and how to determine the criteria\nwhich databases are relevant in the domain of life sciences and medicine for his/her review\nhow to search for effective keywords\, how to use mining tools for search term identification\nhow to search for quality filters or search blocks\nhow to build a sensitive search strategy and translate them into other databases in the domain of life sciences and medicine\nwhich sources you need to consider to search for unpublished or “grey” literature\nhow to manage your literature\nhow to create and where to register your protocol\nwhich tools are available to aid different processes of conducting a systematic review e.g. literature search\, study selection and data extraction and management\nhow to choose a quality assessment scale or checklist for quality assessment of included studies and the body of evidence\nhow to perform a meta-analysis\nwhich essential elements need to be reported to increase your changes of publication into a high-impact journal\n\nAdditionally\, the course participants will take the first steps in performing his/her systematic review. \nTeachers\nDr. Nele Pauwels works currently (since 2015) as Information Specialist at the Knowledge Center for Health Ghent in Belgium. After she obtained her PhD in Medical Sciences\, Nele worked as staff member at the Knowledge Center of the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders (Center for Evidence-Based Practice)\, where she developed evidence-based guidelines and systematic reviews\, according to international gold standards.\nShe supports researchers (on individual basis) during all stages of performing and writing a systematic review (i.e. from protocol development and registration\, literature search\, record selection\, data extraction\, assessing the risk of bias\, data synthesis\, writing and publication). She teaches basic and advanced searching techniques in several (bio)medical databases (such as PubMed and Embase)\, and reference software (such as EndNote). \nDr. Emmanuel Abatih is a statistician at Department of Applied Mathematics\, Computer Sciences and Statistics. In Spring 2023 het taught a FLAMES course on Meta-Analysis together with Saskia Le Cessie. Furthermore\, he has co-authored several papers where meta-analyse were carried out and where he served as the principal data analyst. \n  \nDr. Ellen Deschepper is a statistician at the Biostatistics Unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Ghent University. She obtained a Master of Science in Biostatistics from Hasselt University in 2000 and completed her PhD in Statistics at Ghent University in 2007. SUMMARY:Supporting researchers throughout their PhD journey – From onboarding to defense
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty Doctoral Committee is committed to fostering both research excellence and researcher well-being throughout the doctoral journey. From onboarding to defense\, doctoral researchers are guided through a structured yet personalized trajectory. \nEach doctoral researcher is supported by a Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) and a project counselor. This session will outline their respective roles and responsibilities\, as well as the expectations associated with the mandatory annual evaluation meetings. \nThroughout the doctoral journey\, researchers are encouraged to develop a comprehensive PhD research portfolio that documents research progress\, academic contributions\, societal outreach\, and professional development. We will explore the PhD portfolio across the different stages of the research cycle\, as well as researchers’ competency development and the training opportunities available to support continued growth. \nFinally\, we will take a closer look at the faculty minimal requirements to submit the PhD for defense. The session will provide an overview of the doctoral examination process\, including written evaluations\, the internal defense\, and the public defense before an independent jury.
